Playing video games while occupying the ace spectrum can be a wholly disheartening experience. Players find themselves having to refuse sex and die or to have sex under coerced and thus non-consensual conditions, making navigating this space as a romantic asexual troubling to say the least.
Beyond noting the ways that this imposed binary erases asexual identity, this presentation seeks to explore how creating asexual space in Dragon Age: Origins against the affordances of the game ultimately illuminates the potential of asexual playing practices to contribute to queer games discourse.
In addition, I will also explore how centering such asexual contributions in queer games scholarship is vital to understanding how straight discourse surrounding sex is constructed and how the mechanics of games reflect these expectations. Her research explores the intersection between queer theory, video games, and young adult literature.
Her thesis project draws on the practice of queer failure in video games to analyze the growing genre of young adult fiction centered around video games.
